The Wild Rift Icons Global Championship’s knockout stage just kicked off with the first day of its quarterfinals. Day one of the Wild Rift Icons quarterfinals featured two matches. The first match was between the WRL’s Nova Esports and the WCK’s Rolster Y. Afterwards, the second match featured the WRL’s FunPlus Phoenix and the WCS’ Rex Regum Qeon. Continue reading this recap to learn more about the results of the Wild Rift Icons Quarterfinals.

Nova Esports versus Rolster Y

The first match on day one of the Wild Rift Icons Quarterfinals featured Nova Esports and Rolster Y. Nova Esports took the first game because of a strong draft composition built around Zhang “Y1ze” Yize’s Camille. Rolster Y’s Jung “Ratel” Yoon-ho could not hit his timing on Wukong, causing Nova Esports to snowball the game. Afterwards, in the second game, Rolster Y retaliated. This time, they drafted Camille along with Garen, Varus, Sett, and Singed. Rolster Y patiently waited for fights to come to them. After getting engaged upon, the counter initiations from Ratel’s Garen made the difference.  Game 3 was almost evenly matched. However, 21 minutes into the game, Rolster Y committed heavily to taking the dragon away from Nova Esports. This caused them to lose all of their resources, as Nova took the chance to run them down one by one. An “Long” Xulong’s had a strong showing on Lee Sin in this game to bring Nova Esports a 2-1 lead.  Game 4 was no different from game 3—an evenly matched game. However, a failed attempt from Rolster Y during a dragon fight was punished by Nova Esports, who ended the game shortly after. Nova Esports wins the match with a 3-1 score and advances to the Semi-Finals.

FunPlus Phoenix versus Rex Regum Qeon

The second match of the Icons Quarterfinals’ first day featured FunPlus Phoenix and Rex Regum Qeon. FPX, the WRL’s first seed, entered this series as the favorites. The first and second games were close, but FPX’s fighting prowess proved too much for RRQ to overcome. In-game 3, RRQ tried a different approach to their composition. This time, they picked a fast-paced draft consisting of Akali, Thresh, Morgana, Kha’Zix, and Riven. Although their plan worked perfectly during the early to mid-game, they couldn’t close out the game. FPX’s Yu “0711” Hong’s Jax did a strong job to prevent RRQ from closing out the game. 0711’s Jax basically became a raid boss in the late game with so much durability and healing. This enabled his teammates to deal all the damage they needed to come back and close out the series. FPX beats RRQ by sweeping them with a 3-0 score. As a result, FPX advances to face their fellow WRL team, NV, in the Semi-Finals.
