Day three of the Icons 2022 Play-Ins is a pivotal time during this stage of the tournament. The day’s games feature the first round of winner’s match games that decide which teams make it into groups. Continue reading this recap of day three of the Icons 2022 Play-Ins to know who makes it to groups first.

Group A Winner’s Match – Nova Esports versus Flash Wolves

Kickstarting day three of the Icons 2022 Play-Ins is the match between Nova Esports and the Flash Wolves. Throughout this series, both teams displayed a solid early game. However, Nova Esports was superior in terms of objective control. Their objective control was pivotal as it gave them multiple small advantages that transitioned into huge leads. The Flash Wolves couldn’t keep up with Nova Esports’ better map control, and it cost them plenty. Nova Esports were able to defeat Flash Wolves in a sweep to be the first team making it to the group stage.

Group B Winner’s Match – JDG Gaming versus Rex Regum Qeon

The following match during the Icons 2022 Play-Ins’ third day featured JDG Gaming and Rex Regum Qeon. JDG Gaming were the favorites entering this match because of their region’s dominance. However, RRQ have showcased strong teamfighting and good versatility during their road to Icons. JDG came out strong during their first match with RRQ. They were able to outperform RRQ during fights for objectives. As a result, JDG took the first game against RRQ. Similar to the first game, game two was a slugfest. Despite their gold disadvantage throughout the game, RRQ kept themselves from losing because of their scrappy teamfighting. Their teamfighting prowess shone during a fight for the elder dragon. They won a fight against JDG for the elder dragon to swing the game’s momentum in their favor. A couple more scrappy fights later, RRQ forced a game three after a successful split push by their baron laner, Keith Janold “DevilJ” Gonzales. In game three, plenty of fighting happened again. However, JDG clearly had the upper hand against RRQ in terms of kills and objectives. Still, RRQ fought hard and wouldn’t let themselves go down on their knees. However, RRQ’s fighting spirit and teamfighting prowess wasn’t enough to overcome JDG. The second seed of China proved too big of a wall for RRQ to overcome as JDG defeated them and punched their ticket to groups.

Group C Winner’s Match – J Team versus T1

Next on the list of the day’s games is the match between J Team and T1. Both of these teams are known throughout those who followed League of Legends PC. However, mobile MOBAs like Wild Rift are a similar, but ultimately different game. It would be interesting to see if either of these teams could replicate their LoL PC division’s success. Both teams were evenly matched during the game’s opening minutes. For every kill T1 scored, JT scored one for themselves too. A dragon fight turned the game in favor of JT. They scored three kills for themselves then took the first dragon of the game. Despite having the lead, JT played methodically to cleanly take the first game. Following this, JT got off to another strong start in the second game. However, an extended skirmish near the dragon ended in favor of T1. Afterwards, both teams proceeded to trade kills until another dragon fight. This time, JT came out on top decimating T1 to get the lead. A third dragon fight ended with JT scoring an ace against T1. Shortly after, JT pushed into T1’s base with the Rift Herald to end the game and win the match.

Group D Winner’s Match – Buriram United Esports versus Liberty

The final match of the Icons 2022 Play-Ins’ day three winner’s matches was BRU going up against Liberty. BRU lived up to their reputation as a powerhouse team with a strong start against LBR. True to their status, they outplayed LBR at almost every turn in the first game. However, their winning push was stopped by LBR, who almost stole the victory through a split push. Once BRU secured the baron buff, they became too strong for LBR to overcome. With a final push, BRU closed out the game to take game one. Next, BRU started out strong again in game two. However, LBR kept themselves in contention with scrappy teamfighting. Eventually, BRU’s superior macro gave them enough of a gold lead to just overpower LBR in fights. BRU’s baron laner Metis “NoeL” Wongchoosee popped off for a quadra kill in the final fight to close out the series.
