In patch 5.08, Valorant will soon receive a fresh coat of paint.

The main menu, lobby, pre-match loading screen, and end-of-game screens will all receive a complete makeover as a result of the new Valorant user interface. It is a significant stylistic improvement with stronger graphics, writing that jumps out at you, and a more contemporary appearance overall.

According to Riot Games, the improvements were made to “enhance legibility,” and the main menu in particular now feels much easier to navigate.

But this is just the beginning with the new interface. Additionally, Riot is attempting to create a front-end UX/UI that is more in keeping with the general direction the game is going.

The first modification made in this campaign was the new agent browser UI introduced in version 5.03. To better reflect each agent’s distinct personality and blend in with the rest of the UI, agent textures were replaced with 2D key art images and revised color schemes.

The main menu’s individual tabs have been replaced with bold text in a vertical menu in favor of their previous placement. You no longer need to strain your eyes to see the top bar in order to understand how to start a game because the “Play” button is larger and highlighted in red.

The new lobby screen, which is far cleaner than the old one, will also catch your eye. According to Oliver Zumstein, Visual Design Manager, “We wanted to clear up a lot of visual clutter and enhance the readability of the Lobby Screen overall.”

“We had a lot of decorative items that were attractive but had no genuine use. We boosted color values, enhanced contrast on the screen, and reduced our shape language in order to draw attention to the player card and its representation and to provide you with a clear “call to action.”

The end effect is a lobby screen that makes player cards stand out more and really pop.

For a more dramatic atmosphere overall, the pre-match loading screen is receiving a similar graphic makeover elsewhere. Staff Engineer Max Smiley stated, “We want the faceoff screen to be all about the two teams going to square off.”

“We deleted the map so that your banners would fill the entire screen, better displaying your identity through the player cards, titles, and rank badges you’ve selected. To enhance the head-to-head atmosphere, we amplified the colors of both teams, mirrored the banner layouts for symmetry, and added the text “VS.”

Finally, depending on the result of the match, there are now distinct victory and defeat screens. Agent avatars are now shown on the end-game screen in order to highlight the team-based nature of Valorant, and the team MVP is given a prominent position in the center.

As Riot strives to add motion design and further visual refinement to the game, all new features that are released this year will adhere to this new visual direction, the company added.
