The Middle East and Africa will now be included in the European League of Legends league, which will now be known as the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC).

Europe (formerly LEC), Turkey (Turkiye Championship League), the Commonwealth of Independent States or CIS (League of Legends Continental League), and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) will now comprise the League of Legends EMEA Championship (Middle East and Africa).

Riot Games is also implementing significant adjustments to the competitive format in light of the new and expanded esports environment. Instead of two splits, there will now be three, and the LEC Season Finals will feature far more best-of-five matches and more best-of-three matches.

The Director for League of Legends Esports in EMEA, Maximilian Peter Schmidt, stated that “We’re focused on offering our players the best competition possible.”

The prospects for aspiring and professional League of Legends players in the area will be further improved by these developments, allowing them more paths to compete at the highest level in EMEA.

LEC 2023 season: new format and schedule

In advance of the 2023 season, the merger introduces a new format that includes more best-of-five games in the LEC and shorter, more exciting splits with best-of-threes.

Three splits, each lasting six weeks, will be included in the LoL EMEA Championship (LEC 2023), which will conclude with the Season Finals.

SPLIT2023 SCHEDULE
Winter SplitJanuary – February
Spring SplitMarch – April
Summer SplitJune – July
Season FinalsAugust – September

There are three phases to these splits: the group stage, the regular season, and playoffs.

LEC 2023 regular season will feature a single round-robin style with best-of-one matches between each of the 10 competing teams.

In the group stage, where only eight teams will compete, the format will change to double-elimination, with games being played in best-of-threes.

In the playoffs, the competition will only get stronger. The last four teams will compete in best-of-five games, with the victor being crowned the split champions.

The Season Finals are automatically reserved for the Winter, Spring, and Summer tournaments winners. Championship points determine the remaining spots and the overall seeding.

Teams in LEC 2023

  • Team Heretics
  • Koi (formerly Rogue)
  • Astralis
  • Excel
  • Fnatic
  • G2 Esports
  • MAD Lions
  • SK
  • Team BDS
  • Vitality

According to Riot Games, LoL Esports is considering “broader adjustments to the competitive schedule and season structure in 2024 and beyond,” hence this new format is being implemented as a trial program in EMEA.
