Fans of League of Legends, happy new year. Riot Games has made known a wide range of upcoming improvements to the game, including some significant modifications to the ranked climb.

Since the ranked play was first introduced, it has always been customary for ranked play to have one full season and a reset at the end of the year. Additionally, in order to advance between tiers and pass the final exam to advance to a higher level, players had to complete the whole best-of-five series. To ensure that gamers always have objectives to pursue during the year, the creators are altering the situation in 2023.

“Some folks continue their grind, but others drop out of ranked entirely or turn to smurfing, and that goes against some of our core goals for playing ranked League,” product lead Chris “Auberaun” Roberts said. “At the end of the day, we want you to always have a goal to be able to chase, and to reward you for your accomplishments along the way.”

Season changes to the League of Legends ranked system

Riot will introduce a new structure for League’s ranked play with two ranked resets rather than one starting the next year. The first split will begin in January of each year, while the second split will begin at some point during the middle of the year. The developers are also reducing visible rank influence in matches and modifying the promotion series across tiers from best-of-five to best-of-three.

This also means that there will be two rated skin awards in 2023 rather than just one since there will be two splits highlighted. Don’t worry if you fall short of the Gold ranking requirement to win the skin. As long as they play a lot of games to demonstrate their commitment and effort, Riot is now allowing players of any rank to obtain the new ranked skin rewards.

Another good improvement is coming for those gamers who stopped playing after reaching Gold in order to receive the skin award. Even if a player is demoted back to Silver or below after reaching Gold rank, they will still automatically receive the rated skin. At the end of the split, Gold-level players and higher will nonetheless continue to receive the skins and chromas.

Finally, Riot is now making it simpler to earn split points. The system is currently being tweaked by the developers to give players slightly more points for victories and slightly fewer for losses. In order to encourage players to compete a little bit more during the season, they are also introducing more incentives on the ranked reward track.
