In an effort to revive what has been called a “dead” esports sector in the Philippines, Riot Games has announced a huge League of Legends competition.
The Empyrean Cup, with a prize pool of P1 million, will have its finals at the World Trade Center in November, as revealed by the Esports and Gaming Summit (ESGS) on Tuesday night.
Residents of the Philippines are required to participate in the competition. As long as they fulfill the criteria, members of any sex can join. The deadline to sign up is September 11 or whenever the “valid number of registrants reaches a certain number.”
Announcing the Empyrean Cup as the first of several esports events Riot will be conducting in the Philippines following its recent reacquisition of the game’s publishing rights, Riot Games Philippines country manager Joel Guzman went live on the League of Legends – Philippines Facebook page.
“The Empyrean Cup will be the first of many tournaments here in the Philippines because we want to reignite the [LoL] esports scene here in the Philippines. We are fine-tuning plans for a bigger esports ecosystem which allows a path for players to compete,” Guzman said.
About 256 teams, according to Riot Games, will compete in the open qualifiers before the finals.
The dates for the first online qualifier are set for September 16-17, and the second is set for October 14-15.
On November 3–5, 2023, at ESGS 2023, the four best teams in the qualifying rounds will compete for two seats in the finals.
After 12 years of publication on Garena’s part, Riot Games secured the rights to publish its flagship multiple online battle arena (MOBA) in the Philippines.
Since Riot Games owned the publishing rights, all players outside of Southeast Asia had access to the same items in the game. This resulted in a more level playing field. To address issues with latency and connectivity, Riot Games has also set up a server in the Philippines.
